Anthropic Expands Claude Startups but Pauses New Claims
Anthropic added $7,000 in perks to Claude Startups, but froze new redemptions after heavy demand pushed the portal over capacity.
The package pairs five Claude Team seats with $1,000 in API credits, but a surge in sign-ups forced a sudden intake freeze.
Anthropic announced an expanded Claude Startups program to pull early-stage teams into its orbit. The direct package offers up to $7,000 in software and compute credits. That includes a full year of the Claude Team plan for five users and $1,000 in direct API credits. The rollout, however, hit an immediate roadblock. Following an influx during SF Tech Week, the company posted an “over capacity” notice on its official website, freezing new claims while staff reviews existing applications.
What founders get inside the Claude Startups tier
The direct package totals $7,000 in Anthropic tools. Five Premium seats on Claude Team account for $6,000, calculated at $100 per user each month over a year. The remaining $1,000 is an API grant on the Claude Console, valid for six months for prototyping and testing.
Anthropic also put together a partner directory called Claude Startup Stack. It bundles up to $45,000 in discounts across tools for sales, design, and data processing. Companies accepted into the program get distribution options for plugins on the Claude Marketplace, invites to Founder House gatherings, and virtual office hours with Anthropic engineers.
Eligibility criteria and first-party API limits
To qualify, a startup must be founded within the last five years or have raised funding within the last two. The door is open to bootstrapped projects as well as venture-backed teams. Those backed by Anthropic’s partner venture capital funds can request up to $100,000 in additional compute credits.
There is an architectural catch. The credits work only on Anthropic’s first-party API through the Claude Console. They do not apply to third-party hosted instances on AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI. Startups approved through the portal do get higher request-per-minute rate limits, which eases pressure during heavy testing.
Application surge triggers intake pause
By locking credits to its own console, Anthropic keeps early teams working directly on its native rails instead of routing traffic through cloud partners. Demand for Claude 3.5 in coding workflows gave the offer immediate pull.
That popularity broke the intake pipeline. Hundreds of thousands of applicants registered in days, pushing the portal over capacity and halting redemptions for Team seats and API credits. Founders who already redeemed their accounts keep access. Anthropic has not shared a return date or whether it will tighten screening requirements when intake resumes.
