Claude in Google Workspace: How the New Add-on Works

Anthropic launched a public beta of Claude in Google Workspace, adding a sidebar to Docs, Sheets, and Slides for paid users. Here is how it works.

Anthropic’s official integration brings sidebar edits to Docs, Sheets, and Slides for paid users, though charts remain static.

Anthropic launched a direct integration called Claude in Google Workspace this week. Available in public beta since October 6, the tool runs in a dedicated sidebar inside Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides. The setup lets users rewrite drafts, generate formulas, and build presentations without copying content back and forth between browser tabs.

How Claude in Google Workspace handles edits

The official add-on is live on the Google Workspace Marketplace. Individual users can install it through the Extensions menu, while IT administrators can deploy it across entire teams via the Google Admin console.

Once the sidebar is active, users prompt the model directly within the open file. Claude does not apply suggested edits automatically. Instead, it presents an inline preview and waits for user confirmation before inserting changes. This approval flow keeps Google Workspace’s built-in version history intact, making it straightforward to revert any edit.

Application features break down as follows:

  • Google Docs: the assistant rephrases selected paragraphs, condenses draft sections, and adjusts formatting.
  • Google Sheets: Claude generates spreadsheet formulas, builds pivot tables, and executes background data cleanup tasks in Python. Anthropic notes one functional tradeoff: charts created by the model are inserted as static images rather than dynamic spreadsheet charts that recalculate when figures change.
  • Google Slides: the add-on creates new slide decks while matching the existing color scheme, fonts, and slide layout.

Two-way sync and live panels

The workflow also functions in reverse. Beyond the in-app sidebar inside Google’s tools, Anthropic rolled out beta connectors on claude.ai and the Claude Desktop application.

Under this setup, users open Google Workspace documents directly inside a live side-by-side panel next to the Claude chat interface. Edits sync back to Google Drive in real time as the conversation progresses. The add-on inherits the user’s existing account permissions, linked Drive folders, and custom Skills.

For Enterprise organizations, Anthropic retained standard enterprise data protections. The integration supports Customer-Managed Encryption Keys (CMEK), administrative control via the Compliance API, and audit log exports through OpenTelemetry.

Who gets access and the Gemini rivalry

The update puts Claude in direct competition with Google Gemini on Gemini’s home turf. Previously, using Claude with Google Workspace files meant uploading documents into chat threads for read-only analysis. The sidebar allows teams paying for Anthropic’s models to work inside Google apps without relying on Google’s native assistant.

Access is limited by subscription tier. The public beta is available only to paid subscribers on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Free accounts cannot install the add-on, and Anthropic has not announced a timeline for unpaid access.
