OpenAI Previews College Planner in ChatGPT for Teens
OpenAI previews College Planner in ChatGPT for Teens to track US admissions, deadlines, and aid, alongside new study tools and nonprofit grants.
The tool organizes application deadlines and financial aid for high schoolers, as the company funds counseling nonprofits and forms a youth advisory board.
On October 7, 2026, OpenAI detailed the next phase of ChatGPT for Teens, an under-18 default profile introduced in August. The update previews College Planner, an upcoming dashboard designed to help US high school students organize admissions schedules, alongside new study tools that turn handwritten notes into PDFs and build custom review questions. OpenAI announced the features through its official blog and on X, with coverage from Fox Business and Unite.AI.
College Planner tracks admissions and financial aid
College Planner targets 10th through 12th graders preparing for four-year degree programs across the United States. Embedded directly in the chat interface, the planner gathers application cutoff dates, individual campus requirements, and steps for financial aid, including scholarship deadlines and application fee waivers.
The tool targets a well-known bottleneck in US public education, where student-to-counselor ratios frequently top 400 to 1. By tying schedule tracking to the chat window, OpenAI wants the model to act as a practical organizer during stressful application windows. The company marked the feature as coming soon, without committing to a specific launch date.
Study tools and multi-photo scanning
Alongside the planner, OpenAI rolled out several study tools aimed at day-to-day schoolwork. The iOS app added continuous multi-photo scanning that combines multiple pictures of handwritten notebooks into a single PDF for the model to review. An Android version is still in development. The system can also take uploaded materials and produce flashcards or practice quizzes.
These features expand on Study Mode, an interactive setting that walks students through problems step by step instead of spitting out answers. According to internal metrics released by OpenAI, more than 180,000 teenagers used Study Mode, while nearly 1.2 million opened learning visualization tools in a single week. The company also reported that teen accounts sent 2.7 million more education-related prompts, drawn from an estimated global base of 1.2 billion users.
Counseling partnerships and youth advisory
To counter skepticism from educators and safety advocates, OpenAI pledged financial grants to College Advising Corps, a nonprofit directed by CEO Ekaterina Struett that places recent college graduates as advisers in underserved public schools. The money will support geographic expansion and fund an AI fellowship for college advising, though OpenAI did not disclose the grant size.
The company also partnered with Boston Children’s Hospital’s Digital Wellness Lab, led by Dr. Michael Rich and Cori Stott. That collaboration will set up an advisory council of teenagers to test experimental tools and suggest adjustments to moderation rules and safety settings.
Screen time metrics and rollout limits
The educational push arrives after steady regulatory scrutiny over how chatbots interact with minors. In self-reported usage numbers, OpenAI stated that teenagers spend an average of less than 15 minutes a day on ChatGPT, with fewer than 2% staying active for more than three consecutive hours. When built-in reminders suggested taking a break, roughly half of teen users paused or closed their chats within five minutes.
The current rollout remains narrow. College Planner is built strictly for the US admissions system and traditional four-year colleges. While OpenAI stated long-term plans to support vocational programs and schools outside the United States, it has not shared a release calendar, pricing details, or international availability dates.
