Proximal generates coding tasks with AI

Proximal announced a $15M seed led by General Catalyst and said it reached $200M in annualized revenue by generating coding tasks with AI.

The San Francisco data lab, which says it generates coding tasks with AI, announced a $15 million seed led by General Catalyst and, on the same day, said it had reached $200 million in annualized revenue.

On September 29, 2026, Proximal AI, Inc. posted “New Frontiers.” It announced a $15 million seed at a $300 million valuation, led by General Catalyst, and wrote that work with “frontier labs and enterprises” on coding agents “enabled us to scale to $200M in annualized revenue.” A coding agent is an AI program that tries to write or fix software on its own, rather than just suggesting the next line. The Information covered the round the same day on X and in its paywalled AI Agenda newsletter. The $200 million figure is the company’s own claim, not audited revenue. Proximal sells the product; General Catalyst is an investor.

First: what annualized revenue means

Annualized revenue, often shortened to ARR, is not the money a company has already booked in a closed year. Take recent revenue and stretch it across 12 months, like a shop that sold $50,000 this month and says it is on a $600,000-a-year pace ($50,000 × 12). That math fails if the month was unusual. Nobody outside Proximal measured its ARR. Valuation is the implied price of the whole company: a $15 million seed at $300 million, according to Proximal. A seed round is the first institutional funding. General Catalyst confirmed on its site the same day that it backed the 2026 seed, but it did not repeat the check size or the valuation.

What the company announced

The homepage calls Proximal a “research lab focused on data,” not a marketplace of people labeling text. The post lists SV Angel, Diede van Lamoen (Go Global Ventures), Chemistry, and angels, including Liam Fedus (CEO of Periodic Labs), Kevin Weil, formerly OpenAI’s chief product officer, and Erik Bernhardsson (CEO of Modal). An angel is not a customer. The company does not name who pays.

In the General Catalyst interview, CEO Calvin Chen spoke of “frontier labs, neolabs, and top AI startups that are focused on coding.” The cofounders named there are Chen, Justus Mattern, and Navid Pour. Chen also said “14, about to be 22, in India” and a goal of 50 to 100 people.

How it says it generates coding tasks with AI

Since the June 23, 2026 post “Announcing Proximal,” the company’s thesis has been that the bottleneck for training those agents is not a shortage of human specialists, but a shortage of data and software that can generate and check long tasks. The mechanism, it says, is synthetic generation: models create coding tasks, rubrics (a sheet of what earns a point), and checks run by other agents. The June post cites runs of more than 12 hours and pipelines of more than 30 days. That is the company’s description of its infrastructure, not proof of the ARR.

It is like paying fewer people to write the exam and letting a program print the questions and the answer key. The comparison breaks if the check is weak: the program also prints a bad exercise.

What The Information published

Stephanie Palazzolo of The Information posted on September 29, 2026 at 15:31 UTC that Proximal, a year-old startup that provides coding data to the labs, raised at a $300 million valuation from General Catalyst and, in the last 10 months, surpassed $200 million in annualized revenue. Her post does not give the check size.

The @theinformation account wrote that Proximal uses AI models to generate coding tasks that help train other AI models, that the 40-person startup surpassed $200 million in ARR, and that it is profitable, “its CEO said.” Headcount of about 40 people: RUMOR. Only The Information; the official blog does not give a headcount. Profitability: RUMOR. The blog and the General Catalyst interview do not mention profit. ARR as “revenue in the quarter so far × 4”: RUMOR. That method shows up in Dealroom recaps, not in the official post, and this newsroom did not read the full AI Agenda text.

What we still don’t know

We did not find named customers, financial statements, an SEC filing, or a General Catalyst release that repeats the $15 million and $300 million figures. The company blog, the fund’s interview, and The Information’s coverage all landed on the same day; that confirms the announcement, not the revenue. What is confirmed is the declared seed and General Catalyst’s backing. The $200 million ARR remains Proximal’s number.
